SEMI ANNUAL ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR
The Los Alamos Arts Council has presented arts and crafts fairs in Los Alamos since 1967. The tradition continues every year with our Spring Fair, held outdoors the first Saturday in May on the lawn of historic Fuller Lodge, and our Holiday Fair, held indoors the Saturday before Thanksgiving at the Los Alamos Middle School. Each fair features over 100 New Mexican artists whose work is juried for quality and sales potential. The people of Los Alamos have come to know and love the fairs, which are festive events held at well-established venues and traditional times of year (just before Mother's Day and Thanksgiving)

LOS ALAMOS KITE FESTIVAL
The Los Alamos Arts Council presents the annual Los Alamos Kite Festival the third weekend in May at the Spirio Soccer Fields in White Rock. The festival has grown over the years and now includes several prefestival kite-building workshops for kids at local schools and culminates in a three-day-long, activity-packed, festival weekend.

The kite-festival weekend kicks off Friday night with the start of Gordon's Summer Concert Series and a night kite-flight demonstration. The main festival is held the Saturday and Sunday afternoons and includes music, food, kite-building workshops, and lots of kite flying. Kite enthusiasts from all over the southwest fly their large, intricately shaped kites and hand-made flying works of art, demonstrate stunt-kite flying, and grace the fields with incredibly colorful banners.

Free kite-building workshops for kids are held on Saturday and Sunday afternoon where children build and decorate simple kites with assistance from volunteers. Kids use both their craft and artistic skills to put literally hundreds of these kites up in the sky. For the six-and-under crowd, prebuilt kites are available for decorating. A kite hospital is staffed with kite medics to mend the inevitable broken and injured kites using sticks, duct tape, and ingenuity. For those who do not wish to build their own, a kite vendor is at the festival with a selection of ready-to-fly kites to purchase.

Everyone young at heart is invited. Bring a kite, build a kite, fly a kite, or just take in the artful scene.

MISSOULA CHILDREN'S THEATRE
For more than 25 years, the Los Alamos Arts Council has underwritten a visit by Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) for a full week of auditions, workshops, rehearsals, and a public performance by local children, ages 6–18. The theater group comes to town with the set, lights, costumes, props and make-up—everything it takes to put on a play. The team holds open auditions and casts 50–60 local students, who rehearse throughout the week and present a public performance on Saturday. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales, twists on the classic stories that you know and love. Participants learn creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills, and self-esteem when participating in this unique, educational project. MCT’s mission is the development of life skills in children through the performing arts. MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre and has toured extensively for more than 30 years from Montana to Japan, visiting more than 100 communities each year with 35 teams of actor-directors.

The team holds an open audition beginning at 9:30 am on Monday, July 21, 2008 at Smith Auditorium and casts 50-60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and results in a public performance on Saturday, July 26 at 7:00 pm. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children's stories and fairy tales . . . a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. This year the production is Robin Hood.

Auditions for this week long opportunity for children from Grade one through twelve are free. There is a $20 fee for each child selected for the week long residency. This year’s play will be Robin Hood. See you there! Please pass on the word to other children and families.

PUMPKIN GLOW
The lawn of Fuller Lodge is filled with the eerie, flickering glow of hundreds of carved pumpkins lit for the annual Los Alamos Pumpkin Glow. In past years, well over 1,000 people have gazed in wide wonder at glowing visions of scary creatures, funny faces, cute animals, and fancy flowers. We encourage people of all ages and artistic talent to participate. Everyone can carve a pumpkin!

The annual Pumpkin Glow is generally held the Saturday before Halloween in conjunction with other Trick-or-Treat on MainStreet events. This year, however, the Pumpkin Glow will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008. We will celebrate a “Halloweekend” as Trick-or-Treat on MainStreet will be held Oct. 31. Pumpkin artists drop off their jack-o-lanterns in the afternoon and return after dark to view the hundreds of glowing gourds. Participants can pick up their pumpkins after the event (or choose from the unclaimed works of art).

To make the most of your pumpkin carving experience, consider hosting your own carving party. A wide rage of carving patterns are available on the Internet and in home magazines for anyone interested in carving something more than standard triangle-nosed, gap-tooth jack. We suggest investing a couple of dollars in a simple pumpkin carving kit available at most grocery stores and discount retailers. The thin, child-safe pumpkin saws included in most kits make carving much easier. See our pumpkin carving and preserving tips provided in the sidebar.
